Novak Djokovic is out of the US Open after hitting the line judge
There has never been anything like it in tennis: Djokovic, huge favourite for the title at the US Open, was disqualified in the round of 16!
The Serbian conceded a break to 5: 6 in the first set against the Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.
Frustrated, he knocks away a ball on the way to the bench and hits a line judge – probably unintentionally -.
She [line judge] falls to the ground and must be treated.
This is the rules of Grand Slam tournaments says it all
The Grand Slam rules state: “Players shall not at any time physically abuse any official, opponent, spectator or another person within the precincts of the tournament site.“
“The referee, in consultation with the Grand Slam chief of supervisors may declare a default for either a single violation of this code.”
The top seed and 17-time grand slam champion had just dropped serve to trail Spanish opponent Carreno Busta 6-5 in the opening set of their fourth-round match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
He hit a ball behind him in annoyance that hit a female line judge.
There was no question Djokovic did not intend to hit the line judge, and the ball was not hit particularly hard,
but it was clear immediately that the woman was hurt, with the Serbian rushing over to check on her condition.
He pleaded his case at length before accepting his fate, collecting his rackets and walking off the court.
For that, The referee doesn’t hesitate: he disqualifies Djokovic. He is still protesting on the court.
But the expulsion can no longer be taken away the scandal is perfect – !
